Spring Budgeting: Others

5/20/2017

OBERLIN HARRY POTTER ALLIANCE
Hassan: They co-sponsored a big speaker.
Peace: They’ve spent 350 so far.
Hassan: They were allocated 4k. They said they want to host a wizard rock band and other stuff.
Vince: They have a week left.
Hassan: If they do everything they’re planning to in the spring semester they won’t be underspending severely.
Vince: That’s just not possible since school’s almost over. Is anyone opposed to just doing the benefit concert? That’s like 3,369.
Natalia: I think we should cut them more. They didn’t spend any money and didn’t write any explanation for themselves.
Vince: I don’t think one year of bad spending warrants cutting the budget in half.
Natalia: Why don’t we do all the other things and then not the band?
Hassan: That’s like a 2k cut.
Sulan: I believe that they should have a little bit more of a decrease.
Vince: Proposal to fund the Draco and the Malfoys Benefit Concert at 3228.
Natalia: Proposal to fund the benefit concert at 2228, a band payment of only 1000.
Sulan: I propose 3028, reducing Vince’s amount by 200.

Vince: Now I just want to do posters.
Hassan: I kind of want to fund some smaller events.
Hassan: Proposal to fund Harry Potter themed room escape at 80.

Peace: Proposal to fund publicity at 80, for room escape, concert and general interest meetings.
4/1/0
Passes.
Vince: Proposal to fund the rest in full.

GAP YEAR STUDENTS CLUB
Hassan: They’re asking for 356. They’re math is wrong.
Peace: In Banner they’ve spent zero dollars.
Vince: I don’t want to give them in full.
Hassan: We could just do the spring event and the orientation event.
Vince: Proposal to fund pizza orientation even in full at 100.
5/0/0
Vince: Proposal to fund the pizza event early spring at 100.
5/0/0
Vince: Proposal to fund the rest in full.

PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES CONCENTRATION GROUP
Peace: Last year they got 1.1k.
Natalia: I met with them.
Peace: They’ve spent over 1.3k and they’ve gotten over 1k in support from the peace and conflict studies department.
Natalia: I don’t think they’re due for an increase but I think keeping them the same is fine.
Hassan: Proposal to fund Timothy Phillips at 1514.
5/0/0
Passes.
Hassan: Proposal to fund the rest of programming.
0/5/0

Hassan: Proposal to fund publicity for general interest meetings at 20 per our cap.

Hassan: Proposal to fund the rest of publicity in full.

AMERICAN MEDICAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION
Hassan: They got 1.7k from their budget and 1.5k through ad hoc.
Peace: Yeah they’ve been spending, they have 300 left.
Sulan: I think they did well considering the bad leadership they had and having to manage the officer issue. I don’t think we should decrease them.
Vince: I do like the CPR class.
Natalia: We could do that and one speaker and the membership.
Vince: That’d be everything.
Natalia: Then CPR class and the membership.
Hassan: Proposal to fund CPR class at 2050.
5/0/0
Passes.
Hassan: Proposal to fund membership dues for national chapter of AMSA at 375.
5/0/0
Passes.
Natalia: Would anybody be in favor of funding the premed panel at 200? I don’t like how they didn’t explain it but I do think this would be a great benefit the premed community because we have nobody besides our premed advisor to advise us.
Hassan: My only pushback would be that they could cut back on the number of people in the CPR class and have enough money to do that.
Natalia: Proposal to fund the rest of the programming in full.
0/5/0
Passes.
Vince: Proposal to fund general interest in full at 99.50.
5/0/0
Passes.

OBERLIN ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY
Natalia: They’re asking for more than double they got last year.
Vince: They’ve held a movie night, hosted a lecture and reading of Epic of Gilgamesh and hosted a baking event. They also said they basically had to rebuild the club from scratch because the old leadership left.
Peace: They’ve spent 145 so far.
Peace: They said the tools that they meant to buy cost a lot less.
Hassan: The big chunk is the lecture. 909.
Vince: I’m not going to fund that.
Hassan: Proposal to fund lecture series at 509, cancelling lecture fee.
5/0/0
Passes.
Hassan: Proposal to writing workshop at 76.82.
5/0/0
Passes.
Hassan: Proposal to fund the rest of lectures and workshops in full.
0/5/0
Does not pass.
Peace: Proposal to fund publicity at 6.13.
5/0/0
Passes.

WHAT IS THE STUDENT FINANCE COMMITTEE?

The SFC, 7 senate-appointed student representatives, works for the student body in allocating the Student Activity Fund to all Oberlin student organizations and individual student projects. SFC members meet multiple times a week to review budgets, vote on allocations, and vote and discuss policy, lead working groups with student organizations, and hold office hours to serve as a counselor for students seeking guidance about funding and student government.
