Spring Budgeting: Charter Pending & Newly Chartered

5/20/2017

4.30.17

CHINESE STUDENT SCHOLAR GROUP
Peace: I total they’re requesting 4.5k.
Vince: This sounds like a great group.
Monique: This is different for the Chinese Student Association?
Vince: Yeah this is specific to prepare international Chinese students for careers and stuff.
Peace: I feel like this could be put under ISO.
Vince: Yeah but I don’t want to give them zero.
Natalia: I think we should give them money only for things that are specific to career development.
Vince: I think most of these things are except the get togethers.
Natalia: Do they have a storage space?
Vince: I don’t think so.
Natalia: Do we want to give them supplies?
Monique: I don’t think they need these supplies.
Natalia: We give other groups pens and paper and stuff.
Monique: What do they need it for?
Natalia: Like when they’re meeting and need to take notes.
Peace: You guys want to start with things we want to fund.
Vince: Supplies is too much. The big thing is the projector. We should go to events first because a lot of the supplies we’ll fund depend on what events we fund.
Natalia: I think we should fund them more than general interest because their food is more expensive.
Monique: This isn’t a general interest meeting in nature. This is a celebration of a holiday and they’re using it as their first big event of the year.
Natalia: They’re trying to serve traditional food and it’s general interest because they’re garnering interest in the group.
Monique: Then I would fund at the cap. I don’t think it’s a general interest meeting but it make sense to fund it at our cap or not fund it at all.
Natalia: I think it’s smart programming.  I don’t think it needs to be in full but.
Peace: Proposal to fund Mid Autumn Festival Get Together at 120, general interest meeting level.
Natalia: My proposal is 227.77, three packs of mooncakes and 30 milk teas and 10 for printing.
Vince: I think this is the best budget we’ve seen, they’ve explained everything really well.
Josh: Proposal to fund 126.07, three packs of mooncakes and 10 for printing.

Peace: Proposal to fund Shiyu Yang and Jun Li for workshops with recent graduates at 1058.

Vince: I don’t think they’ll get any money from them.
A: In Fy13 they got 8k. In Fy14 they got 900.
Monique: They probably didn’t do anything.
Monique: I don’t get student orgs that are like academic departments.
Natalia: I think they’re trying to make up for lack of resources that aren’t there.
Josh: We gave them 88 in their Ad hoc.
Monique: I’m down to give them one speaker, the screening, and the trip to Michigan.
Natalia: I agree. Which speaker do we want to do?

WHAT IS THE STUDENT FINANCE COMMITTEE?

The SFC, 7 senate-appointed student representatives, works for the student body in allocating the Student Activity Fund to all Oberlin student organizations and individual student projects. SFC members meet multiple times a week to review budgets, vote on allocations, and vote and discuss policy, lead working groups with student organizations, and hold office hours to serve as a counselor for students seeking guidance about funding and student government.
